NEW DELHI: Former Peru president Alan Garcia Wednesday shot himself, following a police attempt to arrest him in massive corruption.
It was alleged that Garcia, 69, have taken bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in return for favour with public works contracts. However, he denied any wrongdoing.
Two-time president, Gracia, during his second stint, from 2006 to 2011, has been accused of scandal for which the police arrived at his Lima residence early Wednesday, and subsequently, a gunshot was heard.
“A gunshot was heard, and the police forced their way into the room and found Mr Garcia in a sitting position with a wound to the head,” Carlos Moran, a Peruvian Interior minister said.
During Garcia’s second term, the real estate firm won various public contracts worth more than $1 billion.
However, Odebrecht has admitted to paying nearly $1 billion in kickbacks to politicians.
