NEW DELHI: India will have its own massive shopping festival much on the lines of month-long Dubai Shopping Festival that attract people across nations.
“India will host mega shopping festivals in four destinations across the country,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Saturday said.
Sitharaman’s announcement comes on the backdrop of concerns regarding the country’s falling economical growth.
The festivals, according to her, would be covering industries such as gems and jewellery, and textiles and leather, and facilitate exchange between producers and consumers worldwide.
The move is aimed to benefit the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) in the export sector.
India’s merchandise exports have come down by 6.05 per cent to $26.13 billion in August 2019 when compared during the same period last year.
Dubai’s tourism department organises a month-long event, with much fanfare every year named Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), which offers discounts and draws visitors from many countries to experience retail shopping.
The Ministry of Commerce will, however, finalise the names of four large cities in which such mega festivals would be organised next year.
The Narendra Modi government has also announced steps to promote the export of engineering products and handicrafts, and it aims to bring artisans in the domain of handicrafts and textiles to the e-Commerce platform.
