NEW YORK: The United States President Donald J Trump has roped in top counsels— celebrity lawyer Alan Dershowitz and independent counsel Kenneth Starr— to defend him in soon-to-start Senate impeachment trial.
The development has been widely reported by the American media outlets, and according to them, the two newly-inducted counsels would be led by the White House counsel Pat Cipollone and Trump private attorney Jay Sekulow.
Reuters, citing a source reported that a former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi and former independent counsel Robert Ray would also in the group to defend Trump.
The historic trial would decide whether Trump could be removed from the office.
In December, House of Representatives led by Democrats voted in favour of Trump’s impeachment on two counts— arising from his dealings with Ukraine considered as an abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
However, the Republican Party has a majority in Senate which is expected to clear him, since impeachment requires two-third of votes.
Both Dershowitz and Starr also served as counsels for financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Two-decades ago, Trump made critical comments on Starr, and in an interview with NBC’s Today show after Clinton’s acquittal said, “I think Ken Starr’s a lunatic.”
Starr, a former federal judge also previously held a senior Justice Department post under the Republican President George HW Bush.
