NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister Office headed by the PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi will discuss the revival of the two cash-strapped telecom operators – Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) on Thursday.
On August 20, the then Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Nripendra Misra, after meeting secretaries from the Department of Telecom (DoT), Economic Affairs, and Expenditure department has sought additional information and directed to put up a concrete program before making a Cabinet note.
On Monday, the BSNL executive union has written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought his attention since there has been a little progress on the much-needed revival strategy.
Sources in the BSNL, however, say that the situation is worsening each passing day, and the robust telecom network might collapse if the government continues to drag the package.
The telco’s employees have also sought “speedy approval” of the revival package recommended by the Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Home Minister Amit Shah.
In the letter to the Prime Minister, SNEA Secretary-General, Sebastin K, dated September 23, 2019, has expressed displeasure on the Finance Ministry’s views which, according to him, were based on assumptions, and refuted that the Nirmala Sitharaman-headed ministry’s proposal to shut down BSNL.
