NEW DELHI: The US House Wednesday blocked $8.1 billion worth arms sales to Saudi Arabia and other allies with lawmakers outraged over the role of US President Donald Trump in the controversial deal.
The US Congress was annoyed with the role of autocratic Saudi Arabia regime in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi last year who used to contribute in the New York Times.
The House blocked the sales with a comfortable majority but is likely to be vetoed by Trump.
The Trump-led US is looking at more than 20 aircraft sales with support and maintenance, precision-guided munitions and other weapons and equipment to Saudi Arabia and Jordan at a time of rising tensions in the region, and violations of international laws in Yemen.
The US administration, however, appeared to be enthusiastic and took up step of bypassing Congress to approve the sale in May. The new deal, according to analysts wold provide much ammunition to Saudi Arabia to further devastate Yemen which is a blatant violation of international laws.
