NEW DELHI: The United States president Donald J Trump is all set to stand for impeachment, become the third in the country’s history after Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.
Trump is likely to be impeached following the Democrats holding a majority in the House.
On Wednesday, the 435-member chamber would go for a debate on two articles of impeachment against Trump— charging him for power abuse and obstructing Congress.
The charge of abuse of power is based on Trump’s efforts to force Ukraine to investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his family while the other is Trump’s refusal to allow aides to testify or to respond to subpoenas for documents which is taken on account as an obstruction of Congress.
In a six-page letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday, Trump said that it was “vicious crusade” against him and the impeachment vote would backfire.
Meanwhile, ahead of the historic move, the Trump tweeted: “Can you believe that I will be impeached today by the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, AND I DID NOTHING WRONG! A Terrible Thing. Read the Transcripts. This should never happen to another President again. Say a PRAYER!”
Representatives in the House are expected to vote to impeach Trump in line with party, while a Democrat reportedly preparing to switch to the Republican Party to vote against impeachment.
Tuesday, thousands of Americans from Alaska to Florida, marched in support of impeachment. They carried signs saying “Save the Constitution – Impeach!” and “Criminal-in-Chief.”
