NEW DELHI: Democratic candidate for the US presidential election 2020 and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said that a war with Iran would be one of the biggest disasters, following president Donald Trump provocation.
“Mark my words. A war with Iran would be an unmitigated disaster,” Sanders in a tweet said and added that he needed the US citizens to help stop the disastrous war.
The senator further blamed the Trump of creating such a war-like situation and criticised for having escalating tensions.
There has been a standoff between the United States and Iran after the latter has allegedly shot down American drone recently.
The Trump-led US administration also blamed Iran for bombing oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
Meanwhile, the owner of a Japanese tanker attacked in the Gulf of Oman contradicts the US version of the attack, and said that it was a flying object that led to an explosion on the ship while the US maintained that the tanker was attacked by limpet mines.
The US is now considering to move to the United Nations against Iran.
Sanders, a popular presidential candidate accused Trump of creating artificial crisis.
“It’s like somebody setting fire to a basket full of paper and then putting it out. He helped create the crisis, and then he stopped the attacks,” Sanders in an interview with “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan on Saturday said.
The US under Trump is apparently acting against Iran under the Saudi Arabian regime which is also its partner in Yemen war that has led to several thousand casualties.
Any direct attack on Iran could have a serious counter impact on the US, with powerful Russia and China standing behind the country with an immediate threat to Tel Aviv and Riyadh.
