Fireside chat: MediaTek, Nvidia to create better user experience

NEW DELHI: Taiwanese MediaTek is upbeat about artificial intelligence (AI), and is rapidly embracing changing technological landscape. In a fireside chat with Anuj Sidharth, Director, Marketing & Communications at MediaTek India, Anku Jain, Managing Director at MediaTek India talks on powering top handset brands, company's automotive portfolio and Nvidia partnership. Edited excerpts.

Anuj Sidharth: How according to you is the company positioning itself in the development and integration of futuristic technologies within its product portfolio while staying true to its commitment towards democratizing technology access for billions of people?

Anku Jain: So, MediaTek is the world’s 5th largest global fabless semiconductor company and power more than 2 billion connected devices a year. We’ve emerged as no.1 brand globally for smartphones, VADs, Smart TVs, Arm-based Chromebooks, connectivity and networking, and more. We are powering the biggest global brands - whether for work, education, streaming, or gaming. MediaTek chips are designed for every demanding daily need. The MediaTek 5G flagship revenue for 2023 was $1 billion, with a strong revenue growth. The cumulative R&D investment from 2018 to 2023 is $18 billion. And, MediaTek is 2nd in worldwide market share in broadband access, and is growing.

Anuj Sidharth: How does Gen AI can bring benefits to end consumer and how does MediaTek plans to strengthen its position as a technology leader in the era of Generative AI, and what key strategies or innovations is the company focusing on to maintain its competitive edge in this rapidly evolving technological landscape?

Anku Jain: If you see Gen AI is a technology which you want to bet on, there are thousands of business issues which has resolved, let say if you want to talk about technical details about stock market, that way Gen AI has driven a lot. So if you're able to identify a problem, which has to be solved, that can be done by Gen AI, that can be bigger and greater revolution. Gen AI is able to understand data better than what we can do, right. And they can actually crunch the data faster than us make sense out of it. And then we can made a decision based on that. But there could be hesitation, as you said, there could be problems in that. But that's what the average is going all about. And this is important data itself, also the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 is able to support that kind of influence on the chip. And that's why it's so powerful. But I think the business use cases, which are going to evolve over the next few years, will take some time.

Anuj Sidharth: So shifting gears from Gen AI to automotive, we all know that MediaTek has showcased the technology in India mobile Congress, early this year, so would you like to add some more details about MediaTek Dimensity Auto and how MediaTek is working in that direction?

Anku Jain: MediaTek Dimensity Auto launched this year, and it's a big bet for the coming future, because you can see that the vehicles going forward will be EV or they'll be having maybe 16 screens or 10 screens, that need chipsets. And so we are very big on it. So MediaTek Dimensity Automotive portfolio has four different series of chipsets for auto.

Dimensity Auto Cockpit is designed to provide a user-friendly and intuitive interface that gives the driver all the necessary information as intuitively as possible.

Dimensity Auto Connect that offers a uniquely comprehensive wireless communication technology portfolio that includes 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, navigation, and NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) satellite communications, giving us a clear advantage in the future of always-connected vehicles.

Dimensity Auto Drive that utilise the high-performance capabilities of MediaTek’s AI Processing Units (APU), Dimensity Auto Drive provides a scalable and comprehensive open platform for partners to bring intelligent assist and autonomous driving solutions (ADAS) to market.

Dimensity Auto Components support components such as power management, for the next generation of intelligent, always-connected vehicles. As we know that we have very good traction in china already for automotive and we're also looking at India in a very excite manner. But the major I think the change will willstart seeing in 2026. It’s a long game Sebring really six, it's a it's a long game and a long investment cycle.

Anuj Sidharth: With the recent partnership with Nvidia, we can certainly foresee a lot of changes there. Your comments?

Anku Jain: So that's a very amazing collaboration. So we're next on the device side, right. So, there was a device, we have edge AI, computing power on the device etc. And Nvidia is on the cloud side, they have incredible GPUs which can actually work amazingly well on the cloud. And that can be integrated. It's a complimentary partnership as we both have some strengths, and coming together is going to create a very amazing interface for user experience.

Anuj Sidharth: Can you tell us more about the MediaTek Dimensity 8300?

Anku Jain: The main idea is MediaTek Dimensity 8300 is equipped with TSMC’s 2nd generation 4nm processor, with an octa-core CPU with four Arm Cortex-A715 cores and four Cortex-A510 cores built on Arm’s latest v9 CPU architecture. Combined with Generative AI capabilities, low-power savings, adaptive gaming technology, and fast connectivity to bring flagship-level experience to the premium 5G smartphone segment.
