Coronavirus to go worse, worse and worse: warns WHO chief

GENEVA: The World Health Organisation (WHO) Monday cautioned the countries on the escalating situation unleashed by novel Coronavirus or Covid-19 outbreak, indicating the current condition to go worse.

“If the basics aren’t followed, there is only one way this pandemic is going to go. It’s going to get worse and worse and worse,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a press conference said.

The epicenter of the virus remains in the Americas, where more than 50% of the world’s cases have been recorded, according to the WHO head.

The organization said that as many as 230,000 new cases were reported on Sunday alone.

“Almost 80% of those cases were reported from just 10 countries, and 50% come from just two countries,” he said and added that though the number of daily deaths remains relatively stable, there is a lot to be concerned about.

“Let me blunt, too many countries are headed in the wrong direction. The virus remains public enemy number one, but the actions of many governments and people do not reflect this,” Tedros said.

The global organization said that the governments should clearly communicate with their citizens and roll out a comprehensive strategy focused on suppressing transmission and saving lives.

There are no shortcuts out of this pandemic, he warned.

Meanwhile, a Russian University Monday said that the clinical trials of the world's first Coronavirus vaccine have been successfully completed.

The first group of volunteers would be discharged on Wednesday and the second on July 20, Vadim Tarasov, the director of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Biotechnology told Sputnik.

The contagious virus has so far claimed 572,000 lives while confirmed cases surpassed 13 million with 7 million recoveries worldwide.
