5G to drive industrial automation: TCIL

NEW DELHI: The fifth generation (5G) technology-led telecom networks can boost safety applications in industrial automation, as a part of captive enterprise use case, a top official of the state-run company said.

"We believe security is a more important criteria in industrial automation. So, a captive network will be suitable for such requirements, and there is definitely huge demand for industrial automation for safety and security within mining areas," Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) Chairman Sanjeev Kumar said.

Delhi-based TCIL is a state-owned master system integrator.

Kumar further said that parameter fencing at borders or security installations like airports, air force stations in army installations, and 5G-led applications could be used.

However, he added that there are multiple IP technologies being used to secure the boundaries.

"For 5G use cases, it's whether a captive network or it is through a telco grade network and that sort of issues are based on the customer requirements and the use case."

The Indian telecom industry is grappling with 5G-led enterprise use cases even after two years of the launch of commercial 5G networks.

TCIL, led by Kumar, is embracing new technologies, and developing a partner-led ecosystem to capitalise on 5G.

The public sector firm also planned a 5G experience centre.

The Indian telecom sector, dominated by business tycoon Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio and Sunil Mittal-driven Bharti Airtel, are able to slightly improve average revenue per user following the 5G services uptake, driven by fixed wireless access or FWA.

Experts say that telecom carriers would only be able to monetise their next generation networks with the emergence of impressive use cases in the enterprise sector.

Several system integrators are working closely with incumbent telcos, to bring relevant use cases for enterprises in agriculture, healthcare, automotive, logistics, manufacturing and mining industries.

The Indian enterprises are now drifting towards 5G technologies to benefit their operations and enhance productivity, and cut costs.
