Joe Biden-led US may stir crisis in Asia, says Russian minister

NEW DELHI: The United States, led by outgoing Democratic party leader Joe Biden is inciting Taiwan to stir instability in Asia region, a Russian minister told news agency TASS.

The United States is using Taiwan to provoke a serious crisis in Asia, Russian deputy foreign minister Andrei Rudenko said, adding that Moscow would continue to back China over Taiwan.

"We see that Washington, in violation of the 'one China' principle that it recognises, is strengthening military-political contacts with Taipei under the slogan of maintaining the 'status quo', and increasing arms supplies," Rudenko told TASS.

The comments come on the backdrop of worldwide concerns over the US strategically provoking nations and promoting instability and war.

Further, he said, “the goal of such obvious U.S. interference in the region's affairs is to provoke the PRC (People's Republic of China) and generate a crisis in Asia to suit its own selfish interests."

China believes Taiwan as its own territory, a claim that is rejected by Taiwan's government. The US back Taiwan's claim pitting it against China, and is a top supplier of arms to the island nation.

The analysts say that it would be one of the top priorities for US president-elect Donald Trump, to review the country’s foreign policy to de-escalate tensions with China.
