India’s first solar-powered car to debut at Bharat Mobility Expo
NEW DELHI: It is given that electric vehicles will be the future mobility solutions which have already started to make their way into the market. Most contemporary EVs today run on battery packs made of Lithium ion cells. However, there are very few (almost none) examples of a car running on solar power.
For a tropical country like India which is abundant in solar energy, there is a significant opportunity to tap into this energy source. And finally we will witness an electric car in India soon. Pune-based Vayve Mobility will be unveiling the country’s first solar-powered electric car called Eva at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi.
The company unveiled a pre-production concept of the solar powered car at the 2023 Auto Expo. The upcoming iteration of Eva is expected to be closer to the production-spec model. This car promises a range of 250 km on a single charge, and an additional 3,000 km annually powered by solar energy, although Vayve is yet to reveal the battery and motor specifications of the car.
Moreover, Vayve claims an exceptional running cost of just Rs 0.5 per kilometre. The high voltage powertrain enables fast charging which adds 50 km range in just 5 minutes. The company claims features like smartphone integration, over-the-air (OTA) updates, remote monitoring, and vehicle diagnostics. That said, Vayve has designed this electric car primarily for urban commutes.
According to its internal survey, Vayve claims that urban mobility trends show an average daily commute of less than 35 km and less than 1.5 passengers per car. The Eva has been designed to address these two challenges. It can accommodate two adults and a child. Hence, it can be an innovative solution for families seeking a premium yet practical second car for city us
