Ukraine-Russia conflict escalates as Zelenskyy seeks more German military support

NEW DELHI: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Berlin today to hold critical talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, seeking increased military aid amid escalating conflict with Russia. With fears mounting over potential shifts in U.S. policy under President Donald Trump, Ukraine is keen to secure advanced weaponry to bolster its defenses.

Zelenskyy is pressing Germany to supply long-range Taurus cruise missiles, a move that could significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to strike deep into Russian-held territories. Chancellor Merz, only weeks into office, has indicated that Germany will no longer impose range restrictions on weapons sent to Ukraine, but the delivery of specific systems like Taurus missiles remains under consideration.

Russia, meanwhile, continues to set hard conditions for peace, demanding Ukraine’s neutrality and constitutional renunciation of NATO membership. Kremlin officials emphasize that any resolution must include a halt to NATO expansion, a point firmly opposed by Kyiv and its Western allies.

The conflict has seen a recent surge in hostilities, with both sides exchanging heavy drone and missile strikes. Russian authorities report having intercepted over 100 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow and other regions, while Ukraine accuses Russia of intensified attacks on its cities, resulting in civilian casualties.

The international community remains watchful as diplomatic efforts unfold. U.S. President Donald Trump has issued stern warnings to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the escalation, emphasizing the risks of continued aggression, while European countries bolster support for Kyiv.

As the war enters its third year, the delicate balance between diplomacy and military action continues to shape the future of the region.
