India gears up for fastest satcom rollout in the World

NEW DELHI: India is set to achieve the world's fastest deployment of satellite-based communication (satcom) services, according to Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. The government is advancing its satcom policy to enable this rapid rollout, aiming to expand the satcom market to $20 billion by 2028, a significant increase from the current $2.3 billion.

Minister Scindia highlighted that the upcoming satcom services will complement existing terrestrial broadband, enhancing connectivity in underserved and remote areas. He emphasized that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued regulations for administrative assignment of satcom spectrum, and multiple companies have applied for licenses to provide satellite-based communications in India.

The government's push for the satcom policy follows TRAI's recommendations on satcom spectrum allotment, which are currently under review. Once approved, the policy will facilitate the rapid deployment of satellite internet services across the country.

India's initiative to lead in satcom deployment reflects its commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure and bridging the digital divide, ensuring that high-speed internet reaches even the most remote corners of the nation.
