NEW DELHI: India has set an ambitious target of connecting one billion 5G users by 2030, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced while unveiling the theme for the 10th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026. The announcement underscores the government's vision of making India a global leader in next-generation digital connectivity and telecommunications.

Scindia said India has already connected nearly 500 million users to 5G services in just two-and-a-half years, supported by investments of around ?4.5 lakh crore and the deployment of nearly five lakh telecom towers across the country. He added that while India matched the world in rolling out 5G, the country's goal is to lead the world in 6G technology.

The theme for IMC 2026, "Scale without Boundaries," reflects India's focus on expanding home-grown telecom innovation beyond pilot projects and accelerating the adoption of AI-driven networks, digital public infrastructure, advanced connectivity and indigenous telecom manufacturing. The event is expected to bring together global telecom leaders, policymakers, startups and technology innovators to shape the future of digital communications.

The announcement reinforces India's growing position as one of the world's fastest-growing digital economies, with the government continuing to invest in 5G expansion, domestic telecom manufacturing and next-generation communication technologies to drive economic growth and digital inclusion.
