Ukraine drones strike deep inside Russian territory on eve of new talks

NEW DELHI: In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine launched a massive drone strike deep inside Russian territory on the eve of renewed peace talks in Istanbul. The operation, dubbed "Spider's Web," involved over 100 drones targeting five major Russian military airbases, including Olenya, Belaya, Dyagilevo, Ivanovo, and Ukrainka, located as far as Siberia.

Ukrainian officials reported the destruction or damage of more than 40 strategic Russian aircraft, including nuclear-capable bombers and radar planes, inflicting estimated damages worth around $7 billion. The strike demonstrated Ukraine’s ability to penetrate deep into Russian airspace, showcasing advanced drone capabilities after months of covert preparation.

The timing of the attack was seen as a strategic move by Kyiv to strengthen its position ahead of the peace negotiations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reaffirmed demands for a full ceasefire, the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and reparations, while rejecting Russian conditions related to NATO membership and territorial concessions.

In response, Russia launched a massive counterattack overnight, deploying hundreds of drones and missiles against Ukrainian targets, resulting in casualties and significant infrastructure damage. The intensification of hostilities has raised concerns internationally, with calls for restraint from global leaders urging both sides to return to dialogue.

This unprecedented exchange of long-range drone strikes marks a new phase in the war, highlighting the growing role of drone warfare and technological innovation in the conflict. As diplomatic efforts continue, the prospects for lasting peace remain uncertain amid escalating military actions on both sides.
