Putin tells Trump Russia ready for Victory Day ceasefire with Ukraine
NEW DELHI: The Kremlin says Russian President Vladimir Putin had a phone call with US President Donald Trump, during which he indicated that Russia is prepared to announce a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine to coincide with Victory Day celebrations on May 9, marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
According to presidential aide Yury Ushakov, Trump was supportive of the proposal. Ushakov added that both leaders shared similar views on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s government, accusing it of extending the conflict with backing from European nations.
The two presidents also discussed Iran, with Russia presenting proposals aimed at easing tensions over Tehran’s nuclear program.
Speaking at the White House, Trump described the call as “very good.” He said Putin expressed interest in helping address Iran’s uranium enrichment issue, but Trump replied that he would prefer Russia focus on ending the war in Ukraine instead.
