Indian shares fall to near six-month low as oil prices rise
NEW DELHI: Indian equity markets came under renewed pressure on Monday, with benchmark indices falling to near six-month lows as rising crude oil prices and uncertainty over US-Iran talks weighed on investor sentiment. The decline extended the market's losing streak to a seventh consecutive week.
The Nifty 50 fell 1.16% to 22,871.40 in early trade, while the Sensex declined around 1.18%, with the benchmark indices facing selling pressure across several sectors.
The market weakness came as Brent crude futures climbed about 2.3% to around $106.7 a barrel amid uncertainty over efforts to resolve the US-Iran conflict. The stalemate has raised concerns about supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil-shipping route.
Higher crude prices are particularly significant for India, one of the world's largest oil importers, as sustained increases can raise the country's import bill and add to inflationary pressures while potentially squeezing corporate profit margins.
Investors are also monitoring developments in the US-Iran negotiations, with US President Donald Trump saying he rejected an Iranian proposal linked to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the fighting.
