Malaria and chikungunya spike in Mumbai amid monsoon surge

NEW DELHI: Mumbai is witnessing a sharp rise in malaria and chikungunya cases this monsoon season. According to the city’s health department, malaria cases have increased by nearly 20%, reaching 4,825 cases this year compared to 4,021 during the same period last year. Chikungunya has also surged by 56%, with 328 cases reported in 2025, up from 210 last year.

In contrast, the city has recorded a decline in other seasonal illnesses such as dengue, leptospirosis, gastroenteritis, and COVID-19. Experts attribute the spike to the early onset of monsoon rains, which created favourable conditions for mosquito breeding.

Authorities have urged residents to adopt preventive measures, including eliminating stagnant water around homes, using mosquito repellents, and seeking timely medical care in case of fever and body pain.
