Pakistan to host US-Iran agreement signing ceremony in Geneva, says PM Shehbaz

NEW DELHI: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that Pakistan will host the formal signing ceremony of the proposed United States-Iran agreement in Geneva, describing the development as a major diplomatic breakthrough aimed at ending regional tensions and restoring stability.

Addressing Pakistan’s National Assembly, Shehbaz said the signing ceremony of the “historic agreement” will take place on June 19 in Geneva, Switzerland, with Pakistan acting as host for the event. He described the agreement as a victory for diplomacy and peace following months of heightened tensions and military confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

According to initial details, the agreement establishes a framework between the United States and Iran to end hostilities, halt the US blockade on Iran, and reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route for oil exports. The move is expected to ease pressure on global energy markets and reduce fears of prolonged instability in the Middle East.

Reports indicate the agreement also includes provisions for further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, and broader regional security arrangements over the coming weeks. A formal memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed during the Geneva event.

Shehbaz Sharif hailed Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides, calling the development a “historic milestone” for global peace. He said diplomatic engagement had succeeded in reducing tensions that threatened regional security and international trade routes.

The proposed reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is being closely watched worldwide, as nearly a fifth of global oil shipments pass through the narrow waterway. Analysts believe any long-term de-escalation between the US and Iran could help stabilize energy prices and improve global market confidence.
