India raises concern over ADB 800 million aid to Pakistan amid defense spending spike

NEW DELHI: India has voiced strong concerns regarding the Asian Development Bank’s decision to extend an $800 million aid package to Pakistan, pointing to the potential for misuse of funds at a time when Pakistan continues to increase its defense spending despite facing a severe fiscal crisis.
Officials in New Delhi stated that while humanitarian and developmental assistance is important, unchecked financial aid risks being diverted towards non-developmental priorities, particularly military expenditure. They emphasized that international financial institutions must ensure transparency and accountability, especially when dealing with nations under economic distress.
Pakistan, which is grappling with high inflation, a depreciating currency, and external debt pressure, has simultaneously boosted its defense budget—raising alarms among regional observers.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs is expected to raise the issue at upcoming multilateral forums, seeking greater scrutiny of international aid to ensure it is not misappropriated in ways that threaten regional stability.
