Iran, US set for fresh talks in Geneva as Trump warns of force, announces new sanctions

NEW DELHI: Indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States are set to resume in Geneva, even as President Donald Trump threatened the use of force and unveiled new sanctions targeting vessels linked to Tehran’s oil trade.

Iran’s top diplomat arrived in the Geneva for the third round of talks aimed at easing tensions and exploring a possible framework on sanctions relief, nuclear concerns and regional security. The discussions are being held through intermediaries, with both sides avoiding direct face-to-face engagement.

Ahead of the negotiations, Washington imposed fresh measures on ships and networks allegedly involved in transporting Iranian crude, stepping up economic pressure on Tehran. The US administration said the sanctions are intended to curb Iran’s oil revenues and push it towards a broader agreement.

Tehran, while confirming its participation in the talks, criticised the new sanctions and warned that coercive measures would complicate diplomacy. The developments highlight a dual-track approach of negotiations and pressure, keeping geopolitical tensions in the region high.
