US and Iran hold Doha talks to ease Hormuz tensions
NEW DELHI: The United States and Iran have resumed diplomatic engagement in Qatar's capital, Doha, in an effort to reduce tensions surrounding the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The discussions are focused on regional security, ensuring the safe movement of commercial shipping through the waterway, and preventing further military escalation following weeks of heightened conflict.
The renewed dialogue comes amid an uneasy ceasefire and follows a series of military confrontations in the Gulf. While US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism over the talks, Iranian officials have maintained that the nature and scope of the discussions remain limited, highlighting continued differences between the two sides.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly a fifth of the world's oil supply passes, remains central to the negotiations. Global energy markets are closely monitoring the outcome, with oil prices easing on expectations that diplomatic efforts could help stabilise the region and safeguard international shipping.
