Chinse Foreign Minister Wang Yi to visit South Korea for high-level talks
NEW DELHI: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to visit South Korea from August 19 to 20, marking his first official visit to the country in five years. The two-day visit is expected to focus on strengthening China-South Korea relations, developments on the Korean Peninsula and broader regional and international issues.
During his visit, Wang Yi is scheduled to meet South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the Blue House. He is also expected to hold talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac. Discussions are likely to cover bilateral relations, security developments on the Korean Peninsula and other major regional issues.
The visit comes at an important time for relations between Beijing and Seoul. Both countries have been working to restore high-level diplomatic exchanges and improve bilateral ties. Wang's trip is being viewed as an opportunity to further strengthen communication between the two governments and address areas of mutual concern.
The Korean Peninsula is expected to be a key issue during the discussions. South Korea has been seeking a constructive role from China in maintaining stability on the peninsula and supporting efforts toward dialogue. The two sides are also expected to exchange views on developments involving North Korea and the wider security environment in East Asia.
Regional economic and diplomatic issues are also likely to feature prominently. The talks come ahead of the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November, providing Beijing and Seoul an opportunity to prepare for further high-level engagement and discuss cooperation on trade, economic relations and regional stability.
Wang's visit could also help maintain momentum in China-South Korea relations at a time when the regional strategic environment is becoming increasingly complex. Seoul is simultaneously managing its alliance with the United States, relations with China and efforts to reduce tensions with North Korea.
The visit is therefore being closely watched across the Asia-Pacific region. Successful talks between Wang Yi and South Korean leaders could provide fresh momentum to bilateral relations and strengthen diplomatic coordination on issues affecting the Korean Peninsula and wider East Asia.
