PM Modi holds key bilateral meetings with UK, Canada and UAE leaders on G7 sidelines

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a series of high-level bilateral meetings with global leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, reviewing bilateral ties and exchanging views on major regional and global developments.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Starmer, Modi reviewed the strong momentum in India-UK relations following the reciprocal visits of the two leaders last year. The discussions covered cooperation under the Vision 2035 roadmap, spanning trade and economic growth, defence and security, climate action, green energy, technology, innovation, education and people-to-people ties.

Both leaders welcomed progress towards the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and expressed satisfaction over expanding educational cooperation. They highlighted recent developments involving the University of Liverpool's planned campus in Bengaluru and proposed campuses by the University of York and the University of Bristol in Mumbai. Modi also thanked the UK for its strong participation in the AI Impact Summit held in Delhi earlier this year and welcomed progress under the Technology Security Initiative, including the launch of the India-UK Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory.

The two leaders also discussed regional and global developments, including the situations in West Asia and Ukraine, and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

In his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Modi welcomed the positive momentum in India-Canada relations and reviewed progress achieved since Carney's visit to India in March 2026. The leaders emphasized the complementary nature of the two economies and underscored the importance of resilient and reliable supply chains for global energy and food security.

The discussions focused on bilateral economic cooperation, including commercial arrangements related to LNG, LPG and metallurgical coal. Both sides expressed satisfaction with ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and reaffirmed their goal of concluding the pact in 2026.

The two leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation in defence and security and announced plans to begin negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA). They welcomed ongoing collaboration under the Canada-India Talent and Innovation Strategy and discussed expanding cooperation in skill development, innovation and higher education. Modi also conveyed India's support for Canada becoming a Dialogue Partner of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).

A significant outcome of the meeting was the announcement of the establishment of Raisina Americas, a new platform aimed at strengthening dialogue, exchanges and cooperation between India and countries across the Americas. Prime Minister Modi also accepted an invitation from Carney to visit Canada later this year, with both sides agreeing to finalize mutually convenient dates through diplomatic channels.

Modi's meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan focused on reviewing progress in bilateral cooperation across technology, trade, investment, energy and defence. The leaders assessed developments following Sheikh Mohamed's visit to India in January and Modi's visit to the UAE in May this year.

The two leaders exchanged views on regional developments and stressed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity in ensuring lasting peace and stability in West Asia. They also emphasized the need for free, safe and uninterrupted navigation and commerce through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.

Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit, which India will host later this year.

The series of meetings highlighted India's growing engagement with key global partners and underscored New Delhi's focus on strengthening economic cooperation, supply-chain resilience, energy security and strategic partnerships amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
